Pets In Your Home – What Fabrics Are Best

fabric furniture

For those of us with pets, our home can sometimes feel like a battleground.  We love our pets; however, keeping our upholstery and fabrics clean can sometimes feel like a constant struggle, even if you do not allow them on the sofa and chairs.  Having pets means a lot more wear and tear on our furniture as well.  We have some tips to help win that battle with your pets and still maintain a beautiful home.

1.  The Best Options for Pet-Friendly Fabrics

The easiest ways to protect your furniture from the stains and scratches that your pet can cause is to find durable leather or a washable slipcover.  With leather, you can have a fabric that actually looks better with age.  Leather is one of those great fabrics that it is easily wiped clean.  The one drawback to leather in a pet-friendly environment is that it can scratch easily.  That being the case you want to make sure your pet has their nails and claws trimmed.

Pet-friendly fabrics that many owners use on their furniture are slipcovers.  A simple tailored slipcover in either denim is an easy and inexpensive way to make old furnishing look new again.  The advantage to having slipcovers is that you can remove them and have them washed when they get dirty or stained.  If you decide to make your own slipcovers, be sure to wash the fabric first so that it is preshrink and will fit correctly.

2.  Fabric Treatments for Your Pet-Friendly Home

Using the proper upholstery and fabric treatments in a pet-friendly home can extend the life of your furniture.  Consider using any of these three methods to treat your fabrics.  For a nontoxic and environmentally friendly fabric treatment, try using Coitgard.  It’s protective coating will help to repel spills, and it great on carpets and area rugs.  Another great fabric treatment for pet-friendly homes is Customgard.  This fabric treatment seals in a transparent antimicrobial solution that protects your pet-friendly furniture.  Lastly, there is Scotchgard from 3M, the most common of the fabric treatments on the market.

3.  Pet-Friendly Homes Need High Performance Fabrics

In a pet-friendly home, you need to be particular about the fabrics you use.  For both indoor and outdoor uses for fabrics, look for those that use synthetic materials and that have been specially created with technologies that can resist stains and fading.

When measuring fabric for sofa upholstering, be sure to also measure the repeat in the fabric pattern, as this will dictate where the center piece of the arms will be cut. Choosing Office Furniture Fabrics And Finishes

fabric furniture

The variety of fabrics and finishes available in todays current furniture and seating industry is limitless. From high pressure laminates in every possible wood finish to simulated marble and beautiful sophisticated matrix patterns, the choice is literally endless.

One of the challenges our customers are constantly faced with is fabric and finish selection. As I mentioned the choices are boundless, but this is not what produces most of the conflict in decision making.

Many times customers know they will be forced to live with the aesthetic theme they select for a number of years to come. They want to make the right choice so their theme is current but not so trendy that it produces a dated result. In addition to their design concerns, many knowledgeable clients want to make good environmental and ergonomic decisions as relating to the purchase of new furniture and seating.

Clients inherently want to purchase furniture, seating, fabrics, finishes, and materials that are good for the environment. And the good news is they can choose materials that are both environmentally conscious and attractive. They also want to choose products that provide safety, comfort, and ergonomic benefits for their employees.

Many of our large commercial clients have on-staff designers that make these decisions, but most clients are forced to make these choices themselves. Receiving good advice is the key to making educated office furniture and seating selections. This is where experienced consultants can be of assistance.

Getting experienced advice can be invaluable. An experienced consultant can provide insight that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. Good consultants know the origin of materials and know whether the materials are environmentally compliant. They also know how to provide good design and configuration advice. A competent and experienced office furniture consultant is usually familiar with spatial adjacencies and scale dimensions. They can usually provide 2D and 3D CAD options with a variety of views that really help clients to visualize what their new configuration will look like prior to purchasing.

Modularity is also very popular as it relates to home and business office furniture because it provides the ability to change furniture the configuration within certain limits. All in all, my advice would be to engage in due diligence to educate yourself regarding all of your options. If you do not have the luxury of investing time into your perspective furniture project, I recommend calling an expert for advice.

The purpose of this article is to inform and educate. It is our main goal to provide help and assistance to those in need.
